There are sea creatures being discovered on a regular basis, but despite this fact it’s theorized that 95% of the world’s oceans remain unexplored. This means that we are bound to keep discovering new and interesting species on a regular basis. Here are 8 creatures of the sea that we have discovered that you may not have heard of!
8. Blob Sculpin
This thing looks hilarious, and just the description alone is cringe-worthy. First off, it can grow up to 70 cm or 28 inches, the head is broad and flattened, the eyes are large and widely separated, and the mouth is curved with fleshy lips. Something about “fleshy lips” really gets me.
7. Dumbo Octopus
Bet you can’t guess why this thing is called the “Dumbo” Octopus! Just kidding, it’s literally exactly what you think it is. Due to the placement and size of it’s ear-like fins, it’s been named after the Walt Disney character it so resembles.
6. Japanese Spider Crab
This image is gorgeous, but it may not do it justice. This thing has the greatest leg span of any arthropod, reaching up to 5.5 meters or 18 feet from claw to claw. That’s insane! The body itself can grow up to 40 cm or 16 inches and weight up to 42 lbs. The Japanese Spider Crab sounds like it would be a terrifying thing to run into, especially if they roll in packs.
5. Giant Tube Worm
These worms here are impressive. When they call them “giant”, they aren’t kidding! Reaching lengths of 2.4 meters or 7 feet 10 inches, with a diameter or 4 cm or 1.6 inches, these things get large. Not to worry though, they live over a mile deep and up to several miles deeper than that, so unless you’re going deep, you’ll be alright!
